BURLPLE

The founder of Wing Bass enjoys throwing me random challenges of design, this was a fun one. I was given a small bookmatched set of purple injected maple burl and instructed to incorporate it into a W30 model bass. Since the pieces were much too small for a facing, I created a secondary inlaid facing arrangement that stretched the wood across the length of the facing. Keeping all of the other woods light in color helps to make the eye go right to the purple. I had also really wanted to use the oval shaped Delano pickup on one of these basses just for the aesthetic balance, and this was the perfect opportunity to work one into the design. The bass has a birdseye maple neck and fingerboard, along with a figured maple top and Douglas fir body. The purple burl was also used for the inlays and truss cover.
